We are seeking a Senior Highway Estimator due to our strong forward order book with long-term framework contracts and looking to enhance its existing commercial team. The role provides an opportunity to join a highly respected company with a direct influence on its continued growth and development. Based primarily in Bolton and Stockport with sites throughout the North West.

Location: 

  • Primarily based at Head Office, Hall Lane, Farnworth, Bolton, BL4 7QF
  • Plus working on and travelling to sites throughout the North West
  • The roles for 1 day a week hybrid home working if required

Depot: 

Head Office: Hall Lane, Hall Lane Works, Farnworth, Bolton, BL4 7QF

Contract Type:

Permanent (subject to successful completion of 6-month probationary period)

Working Hours: 

Monday – Friday 09.00 – 17.30 including ½ hours lunch (40 hours)

Renumeration
Package:

  • £65,000 – £70,000
  • Car Allowance £5,500 (plus mileage allowance)
  • Profit Related Bonus
  • The company operates a Workplace Pension Scheme with The Peoples Pension

Holidays:

35 days including bank holidays (Pro rata for 2026)

7 days are to be taken at the Christmas Shutdown

The majority of our income, approximately 80%, is generated from extended framework contracts with local Northwest authorities, which typically span from 4 to 10 years. In addition, the company also serves House Builders and Tier 1 Contractors, carrying out S278 and S38 works on their behalf.

We thrive by working with our clients from early inception of the project to provide cost effective solutions. Additionally, we assist clients in preparing funding bids and provide initiatives in community engagement and methods of delivery. Our Social and Environmental responsibility track record is exceptionally strong, surpassing our competitors on Quality Bids and Social Value Matrices. Our Clear Management controls and structure ensure efficiency, and as partners of Framework contracts, we have a sizable forward order book extending over four years.

Our projects are solely located within the North West of England, with most of our schemes within Greater Manchester or the neighbouring areas.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Negotiation with clients on existing Direct Award Frameworks
  • Prepare and submit estimates for Highways Schemes both from existing schedules of rates and/or first principle using estimating software (Candy)
  • Negotiate with clients including site meetings, measurements and agreeing method of working
  • Engage with clients in ECI for future schemes
  • Production of programmes (MS Project) and method statements
  • Work with the Procurement Manager developing key supply chain partners
  • Lead the Company’s Bid’s on PQQ/Framework submissions
  • Prepare the Social Value Matrix of all commercial bids
  • Preparation of Estimators handover files to site teams detailing build up/ assumptions/ targets
  • Assist Commercial team with Compensation Events build up
  • Work closely with the Commercial team on the Company’s Marketing and Business strategy

Skills

Essential

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience Highways Estimating or Senior QS role
  • Experience in Causeway / Candy or similar estimating packages
  • Good communication and negotiate skills
  • Experience of a commercial/engineering role in the highways industry
  • Working knowledge of NEC and JCT Contracts and SMM7
  • Ability to lead and develop a team
  • Able to work to strict deadlines
  • Clean driving licence
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and MS Project
  • Experience in writing method statements

Desirable

  • Knowledge/Qualification of construction health and safety
  • Experience in Bid Writing
  • Experience of using take-off software
