Works commenced across several locations in Brierfield and Nelson on 2nd March 2026 and will continue over the coming months in phased operations.
The Safer, Greener, Healthier Streets programme will deliver a range of public realm improvements designed to create more vibrant communities by rebalancing streets to make them more people friendly. The scheme aims to encourage community cohesion, walking and cycling for shorter journeys, while improving connectivity to public transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Improvements within the project areas will include landscaping and tree planting, pocket parks, and footway widening, alongside a range of speed management measures such as pedestrian refuges, road narrowing, courtesy crossings, and general street improvements and adaptations.
During the works, traffic management will be in place, which may cause minor delays. Driveway access will be maintained where possible and emergency vehicle access will be in place at all times.
